A Humble Story of Generosity...

Some people today can’t afford to undertake repairs in their homes that need urgent attention. This is the reality for many people, and our business genuinely understands and empathizes with our customers. For many reasons, surplus funding may not be ready and waiting to replace an item, such as a failed hot water system, that suddenly ruptures and leaks.

In essence, this humble story of generosity serves as a reminder of the impact that empathy, compassion, and selflessness can have within a community.

Our team has always considered this when discussing ongoing costings and preparing customer quotes. Still, we now know we have some very caring individuals working with us, and this is something we are proud of. This came about when one of our Plumbers, Ollie, in conversation with one of our lovely long-term customers, Sarah, was asked how he likes working with us. Ollie then went on to explain his empathy for the less advantaged people who can’t afford to conduct HWS replacements at short notice. Sarah was affected by this man who cared so much for the people he worked for.

The next day, Sarah rang Anton and told him how Ollie had affected her. Overnight, Sarah had discussed this with her partner. She said what a wonderful young man he was and that he had spoken very highly of Brown and Son and the team's values, but his concern for those less fortunate had touched her. Sarah then told Anton that she would like to pay for someone in need to have their hot water service replaced up to the value of $1500. We were shocked. We know Sarah well, and she is a lovely lady. She didn’t want any recognition and she didn’t require a receipt. She said “We trust your judgment” and “You will know when the right person comes along.”

Well, the right family came along—the perfect candidate to receive Sarah’s generosity. An elderly lady and her husband living in Evanston Gardens are very unwell. Their son, a Veteran, called us for a no-hot water job on a Friday. When we arrived on a Friday afternoon, the 250L electric storage hot water system had ruptured and was irreparable. Our plumber Heath, who attended the job, called Anton and explained the situation regarding the elderly couple. He explained that the customer was very stressed and had told him they can’t afford to replace it. They didn’t even want us to install our temporary 50L HWS to restore hot water temporarily - due to them not knowing where to get the funding to replace the unit.

We installed the temporary unit and called Sarah on Monday, and she happily paid $1500 towards the replacement cost.

In essence, this humble story of generosity serves as a reminder of the impact that empathy, compassion, and selflessness can have within a community. It underscores the significance of recognizing and addressing the needs of those facing challenges, showcasing how a simple act of kindness and paying it forward can make a genuine difference.
